How the compression works
PDFs that weigh a lot are almost always scans or photos: each page is a large image. The tool saves each page again with a resolution and quality chosen to read well on screen and print without problems, and the file gets much smaller.
To be clear: if your PDF has digital text (for example, an electronic invoice or a document made in Word), compressing it this way is not a good idea, because the text would no longer be selectable. When we detect a document like that, we warn you before doing anything.
Which level to choose
“Balanced” works for almost everything: ID, receipts, certificates and scanned notes. “High quality” is for when there is small print or you are going to print. “Maximum” is for when a form requires a very small size, such as 1 or 2 MB.
As with the other tools on the site, your file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to any server.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the size drop?
With scanned documents, 50% to 90% less is typical. It depends on how the original file was made.
Why did my PDF not get smaller?
It was probably already optimized or it has digital text. In that case we tell you and you are better off using the original.
Does it still read well?
Yes. With “Balanced” and “High quality” the text reads fine on screen and when printed. With “Maximum” the image may lose some sharpness.
Can the text be copied after compressing?
No. Each page becomes an image, which is why we recommend this tool for scans and photos.
Is it safe to compress my ID here?
Yes. The file never leaves your device: the whole process happens inside your browser.
